Case Study 01: Carillion Rail
Carillion Rail has scooped a top civil engineering award for its highly successful project to replace the deck on the remote Leven Viaduct, in Cumbria.
The project has won the prestigious Institution of Civil Engineers North West Region 2007 merit award for engineering excellence.
Leven Viaduct on the Carnforth to Barrow railway line crosses Morecambe Bay and forms a vital link for travellers using the West Coast Main Line. The project involved replacing the existing 460-metre viaduct within a single working period of just 16 weeks, despite frequently hostile weather conditions.
As part of this project we were commissioned to produce many units some up to 9metres in length. Lead times were also of critical importance to the project.
